A private postal address is a rented address where your mail gets accepted, scanned, and made available to you digitally. It's worth it mainly for people splitting time between two homes, moving often, living abroad for a while, or who'd rather not list their home address everywhere. One limit applies: a postal address isn't a registration address. You still register with the residents' office wherever you actually live.
Business addresses for the self-employed are well known. That private individuals can rent a postal address too is less so, even though the reasons are often very everyday.
How does a private postal address work?
You book an address with a street and house number from a provider. Senders write to that address from then on. Staff there accept and log your mail. You get notified via app and decide, per letter:
- view only the envelope
- have it opened and the contents scanned
- have the original forwarded
- have it archived or destroyed
The difference from a classic PO box: you don't have to pick anything up, and you get a real street address instead of a box number. More on the comparison in Setting up a German PO box.
Who benefits from a private postal address?
Weekend commuters and couples with two homes
Weekdays in Frankfurt, weekends in Kassel: mail always arrives wherever you aren't. With a fixed postal address, everything lands in one place, on your phone.
People going through a transition
A breakup, an apartment search, a temporary sublet. If you're moving twice over the next few months, you only change your address once, at the bank, with your insurer, with your employer, to the postal address.
Students and apprentices
Changing flatshares, a semester abroad, an internship in another city. The postal address stays put, wherever the bed happens to be.
Longer stays abroad
Working in Barcelona for a year still means mail from Germany: your pension provider, your bank, your car insurer. We cover this in detail in Away for longer: storing, forwarding, or reading mail digitally
More privacy
For online orders, classifieds sales, club work, or sweepstakes, you don't always need to give out your home address. A postal address keeps your home address out of a lot of databases.
What a private postal address can't do
It doesn't replace your registration address. In Germany, you have to register with the residents' office within two weeks of moving in, with the home where you actually live, backed by a landlord confirmation. A rented postal address can't take on that role.
It's not on your ID. That still shows your registered residence.
Some institutions require your home address. Banks have to record your home address when opening an account, and authorities often ask for it explicitly on forms too. You can frequently list the postal address as an additional correspondence address, but not in place of your home address.
Stay honest with authorities. Using a postal address to create the impression you live somewhere else can have legal consequences, for benefits, vehicle registration, or taxes.
An example: two cities, one mailbox
Picture a couple: she works as a doctor in Cologne, he as an engineer in Leipzig. Each has an apartment in their own city, and they commute on weekends. For a long time, mail just sat around: whatever arrived in Cologne waited a week until she read it, and vice versa. A letter from the property management company with a utility bill sat unopened for two weeks.
He rents a private postal address and gives it to his bank, insurer, and online shops. His registration address stays Leipzig. Now he sees every letter the same day in the app, whether he's in Cologne or Leipzig. She's considering doing the same.
What to look for when choosing
- A real street address, so senders who don't accept PO boxes can still deliver
- Mail accepted by staff, including registered letters
- Clear allowances: how many letters and scans are included in the plan, and what does each extra one cost?
- Data protection: where are scans stored, who sees your mail? Look for servers in Germany and GDPR-compliant processing.
- Easy cancellation: monthly cancellable plans make sense for individuals, since life circumstances change.
- Parcels: are they accepted, how long are they stored, what does forwarding cost?
